Snow and Cold
Last Saturday, the first snow covered the hollow on the same day as last year--December 5. But, it was not quite as much so I hope we will not have to endure the same record snowfalls.
Unlike last year, the weather turned very cold after the snow so the birds flocked to the feeders. Here's a fluffed-up Carolina Wren waiting her turn in the burning bush. The red berries are a favorite of the juncos and white-throated sparrows.
The male and female Purple Finches also wait to get their chance to munch the sunflower seeds.
While winter isn't my favorite time of year, it doesn't seem to faze my dog, Kookie. She might not stay outside long but she still manages to dig. I don't see how she smells anything in the snow.

That is the biggest Carolina Wren I've ever seen - really puffed up for warmth! And a lovely photo with all the berries. Hope the weather is better this winter here in Central Va, too, altho it has not started off well. Way too cold, too soon. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots~ I love the photos of the birds especially.
ReplyDelete:)
Great photos!!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post and the photos, particularly the one of the Carolina Wren.
ReplyDeletewhat a gorgeous view in that first picture. the snow adds such depth to it. i'm still wishing we'd get more than an inch of snow here. i'm sure the birds are loving their food source during all these harsher days ahead. good to see Kookie outside enjoying the weather. i don't know how they smell anything under all that white either. hope all is well. have a great day.
ReplyDeletewebb--it's just gotten colder today but at least the prediction is only 1-3 inches of snow. The wind though is brutal.
ReplyDeleteLouvregirl--thanks for the note.
ReplyDeleteVernonica--thanks!
Hilke Breder--I love the Carolina Wren too.
Naquility--snow seems to make the mountains seem taller to me. The birds are going thru the feed so fast.
ReplyDeleteLovely pics my friend! I am HOPING we do NOT have a repeat of last winter ..... but I hear we have two more storms on their way this week. Maybe rain .... maybe snow .... Yikes!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics. Love the wren too. Great blog. Glad I found it. Will definitely subscribe and I'm following too.
